Only Jesus knew what awaited these bold disciples of his. They sounded so confident, so assured when James and John said they could drink the cup Jesus would drink (10:38-40); when Peter, with the crucifixion only hours away, loudly stated: “Even if all fall away, I will not” (14:29). Bold. Confident. But definitely not prepared for the next hours and days. So Jesus takes his confident confidants, Peter, James and John, with him into the garden of Gethsemane. It would be a humbling lesson, as their bold words were soon to be tempered by what they would see and hear and experience.
