Jesus’ disciples are at a crossroads. Jesus has set his face toward the cross in Jerusalem—and he’s trying to help his disciples set their direction in life. They had earlier fought over which of them was the “greatest” and Jesus told them to become like a child! Then a rich young man wanted to follow Jesus without paying the price, and got a lesson on humility, dependence and trust, a lesson intended for the disciples too! Jesus also reminds them of his impending suffering and death, and all along the way is educating them to be his kind of disciples. Then James and John say, “Can we be your right hand men in your Kingdom?” So it’s back to the drawing board for another lesson on servanthood.
