Heidelberg Catechism Q&A #2 gives us the outline for the entire catechism and, in a sense, the entire Gospel: sin, salvation and service. Where did they get that? Like everything else in the Catechism, directly from the Bible, more specifically from the Apostle Paul. In fact, that outline could serve as a summary for Romans 1-8. However, while the Catechism focuses on individual salvation, Paul’s concern here is with God’s plan for salvation history, accomplished through Jesus Christ. Individual salvation is included within it, but it is not the main point of Romans.
