Earlier in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he reminds us that God chose us as building blocks of His new community in Jesus (1:1-14), and he prays that we might have open eyes to who we are in Jesus (1:15-23). So who are we, we who have been built into God’s new community? When Paul opens our eyes in Ephesians 2:1-10, the first sight is awful and heart-wrenching: it’s a graveyard, with our own tombstones in plain view. God selected sinful, spiritually dead human beings as materials for His church! Some today say that the church is full of hypocrites; it’s worse than that: Paul says the church was full of corpses!
